How we work

In a nutshell, we help the adult you, what we call the Grownup, learn to supply the young parts of yourself with everything they need. That way they don't have to jump into the driver's seat of your life to get it for themselves.

We ask you to set an intention for yourself that is worth at least three times the time and money so you get a bargain.

We also ask you to set aside an hour or two for the session. Then, with a little background and your intention to guide us we go to work.

Please review our page on Inner Family Healing

  1. We help you recognize and connect with your Inner Children. Everyone has Inner Children. Inner Children are the parts of ourselves who stepped up to help us survive when we were hurt as children. Unfortunately, although these Inner Children may have saved our lives way back when, they are caught in an emotional time capsule that prevents them from seeing the present clearly, and their behaviors don't work very well for managing an adult life. They may not even know how tall you are. When you see a parent losing it with their 2-year-old in the supermarket, you're witnessing an Inner Child jumping into the driver's seat. Connecting with these Children involves a simple meditation and then learning to recognize how they respond.

  2. We teach you to give your Inner Children what they need to heal. The Inner Children may never have had a chance to be heard before. They often carry pain, anger, and fear from long ago, and, to be healed, they need to speak those feelings out, preferably to you, the person closest to them. Inner Children also need good boundaries in order to feel safe, and they need touch and attention. You can give all of these in your inside world. They have more needs, but it's important to know your Inner Children will help you know them. And it will be a privilege: They are faithful and courageous. They never do anything without a positive intent. They are worthy of your time and care. And they will love you back.

  3. We help you strengthen your Grownup. We teach you what your parents would have taught you about taking care of the Inner Family if only they'd known and understood their own lives. At Innerkids.net, we do our best to fill in those gaps. For example, we teach ways to identify verbal abuse so your Grownup can name it in the moment and stop it. And we identify the need for good limits on acceptable behavior.

We help you do it yourself. In writing How to Love Yourself When You Don't Know How: Healing All Your Inner Children, Mary Grunte (the originator) and I have made available everything we've learned about Inner Family Healing. Sometimes the book is all someone needs (not me, I needed personal help and lots of it!). If you can do it yourself, wonderful. If you want help, we're here. Either way, you might find it helpful to have one to three sessions with us, but let your own intuition be your guide.

Checklist for Preparing for a Session

We recommend you prepare to get the most out of the time.
Sessions run from 1 to 2 hours. Make sure to:

  1. Set a positive intention that describes how you hope to the session will produce. By positive, we mean translate a problem statement like "fix the wimpy hysterical part of myself that comes out with my children" into a solution statement like "Conduct myself in such a way that my children feel safe, loved, and respected, and I know my Grownup has been in charge. Make sure the intention is worth at least three times the time and money you will be spending.

  2. Pick a quiet time and place for the session where you won't be interrupted.

  3. Remember, you have a purpose in life, even if you've not yet discovered it. If you're unclear and in crisis, I can assure you that this is training, boot camp for the good that you'll be able to produce in the coming years.
